LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Curt VanderWall on Friday encouraged Michiganders of all ages to cultivate their reading habits during March is Reading Month.
“March is Reading Month reminds us to recognize the vital role reading plays in the development of our children as students and our success as adults,” said VanderWall, R-Ludington. “In the words of the immortal Dr. Suess: ‘The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.’ Children who are read to at an early age tend to become readers for life and reading helps people of all ages live a more rounded, more wise, and more enjoyable life.”
In celebration of March is Reading Month, VanderWall is making available three videos of himself reading books by Michigan Notable Books list author Kathy-jo Wargin that can be enjoyed and utilized in classrooms. The video series includes his reading of Michigan’s Official State Children’s Book, “Legend of the Sleeping Bear,” as well as “Legend of Mackinac Island” and “Legend of the Petoskey Stone.”
“It was a great joy to once again record a series of videos that can be shared virtually in classrooms across Northern Michigan,” VanderWall said. “As we continue to move past the restrictions and safety measures put in place in our schools because of the pandemic, I also look forward to visiting classrooms and reading in person once again.”
Teachers who wish to feature the videos in their classroom can contact VanderWall’s office at [email protected] or 517-373-1725 and his staff will provide the videos and some additional resources to help celebrate March is Reading Month remotely.
VanderWall encouraged parents to be involved as well. Parents can check with their local school or community library to learn about unique ways they can take part in reading activities along with their children.
